Five Tips to Make Your New Hire Love You and Their New Workplace - Your Career Intel
Five Tips to Make Your New Hire Love You and Their New Workplace - Your Career IntelFinding and hiring the perfect employee is never an easy task. It takes time, effort, and some amount of irresponsible snacking. But as excited as you are with a great new hire, you can bet they are also thrilled to move to their new workplace. And as they join their new team, keep this checklist for welcoming new employees in mind so your new hire can tee off and is not awkwardly stuck at the driving range.1. Have their Desk and Computer Logins Set Up If you are a new recruit, there is no greater buzzkill than a computer that isnt set up or a login that doesnt work. As a manager, you have to make sure the new hires desk is set up, computers are functioning and logins provide access, so that your new employee doesnt feel like you are unprepared to have them as part of your team.2. First Days Are Tough, Make them Easy First days are always rough for new hires that find themselves in a new place, with n ew faces, and new snacks Ease their transition to your workplace by personalizing their first day and week to reaffirm they made the right decision to pick you. Make them feel special by taking them out to grab lunch or after-work drinks. Ensure that the rest of the team is also available to meet the new hire and get to know him/her. No one likes to feel left out, so make sure your new hire is enveloped in the warm glow of a welcoming team.3. Who Am I? What Am I doing Here? People assume their new hires know everything about the company because they researched your website for the job interview. However, the company website does not truly reveal who you are and what your main focus and vision is. Spend a few days acclimating new employees and giving them an in-depth look at your companys mission, vision, brand, philosophies and culture.4. Tell Them What Their First Week (and beyond) Will Look Like Brief your newest team member on what they should expect in their first week. Schedule personal one on one meetings with their manager to discuss what is expected of them. Without this they do not have a path to embark on. And dont just stop there you can help your new hires by giving them a roadmap for their first 30, 90 and 180 days of work, so they have clear direction in which way to proceed. It is much easier to get started when they have some idea of what they are expected to do5. Paperwork is Necessary (in small doses, spread out over a week) HR dont stuff a bunch of paperwork down a new hires throat on their very first day. This can be unwelcoming and is impersonal. Paperwork, at the best of times, can be confusing and when you are a new hire, it could be overwhelming. So, provide the new employee plenty of time and direction to finish the requisite paperwork. Also, make sure you are available to answer all of their questions quickly and appropriately. Moreover, spreading out any paperwork over their first week helps prevent new team members from being overw helmed. While these tips offer some ideas on how to welcome a new employee, there is nothing easier to make them feel at home (or in this case, office) than a big friendly smile and a warm greetingWhat tips do you have to make a new employee feel welcome in the workplace? Carrie Underwood is Being Bullied By Moms For The Most Ridiculous Reason
Carrie Underwood is Being Bullied By Moms For The Most Ridiculous Reason We all know that women are judged much more harshly than men. Were alway too loud or too quiet, too reserved or too domineering, too nice or too cold. But really, motherbeis are judged even more harshly than any of us. Theres this idea floating around that there is one perfect type of mother. But the funny thing is, shes just an idea. She doesnt actually exist, yet women are consistently comparing themselves and each other to her. This breeds mom shaming, the internets favorite way to rob women of their right to be individuals who make individual choices. The latest celebrity to fall victim to mom shaming? Carrie Underwood. And the country star is probably the best example ever of how ridiculous mom shaming is.Moms on Instagram decided to bully Carrie for... wearing make-up to her sons little league soccer game. After she posted a picture celebrating her son Isaiah scoring two goals, hateful messages came stream ing in.Well that is a crap hr of makeup for a soccer game, one commenter wrote, according to Yahoo. Show up like most soccer moms, messy hair dont care, no makeup and a coffee mug in hand, another added.Source InstagramOthers had the audacity to theorize that the star got plastic surgery.I love Carrie. But it looks like shes starting the injections and face changing tweaks way too soon. Shes looking a little plastic these days, wrote one of the many commenters suggesting Underwood got lip injections, microbladed her eyebrows, or fixed her nose.Source InstagramBut the most ridiculous accusation was that she somehow doesnt care about her son because she posted a selfie.According to Yahoo, some commenters said that her posting a photo of herself dolled up rather than posting a photo of her son is proof she is vain or doesnt care about him.Of course, this boils down to the belief that the ideal mother cares only about her kids, all day and every day. She makes no time for her own appear ance, her own autonomy, or her own life. And to be quite honest, thats internalized misogyny speaking. Women are allowed to make personal choices like whether or not to curl their hair, and they should be able to do that without criticism.Because think about it if we criticize a mother this badly for drawing on her eyebrows, how horribly are we criticizing mothers for bigger individual choices that affect her ability to operate in our society, like continuing to work after having kids?Working moms already know the answer to that question. The criticism is pretty bad. And its affecting womens parity in the workplace. In order to alleviate this pressure, we need to stop mom shaming at every level whether its criticism of the baby stroller you use or the nanny you choose.Thankfully, supportive moms chimed in to support the country star. They reminded her that shes allowed to do whatever she wants.I see moms that dress like this at soccer games, wrote one commenter. You look great, and y oure being the best mom you can be. Literally the most respected woman country artist there is and this is how other moms act? Post all the selfies you want, we know you love your kidsNow thats the kind of women supporting women we all want to see.

Almost half of Americans arent happy with their paychecks
Almost half of Americans arent happy with their paychecksAlmost half of Americans arent happy with their paychecksIn a tight labor market and booming economy, it would seem logical that valued workers could demand satisfying wages. But a new poll suggests thats not the case.A collaboration between SurveyMonkey Audience and Quartz at Work found that 49% of Americans arent satisfied with their earnings. Only 46% of women report being pleased with their incomes, versus 56% of men. This financial angst may be part of why workers are choosing to explore other job openings, especially when it appears that, at least in neighboring countries, leaving a company can result in a disloyalty bonus of 4%.This dissatisfaction exists as part of a wider system thats devaluing worker contribution. According to The New York Times, in 2000, when the American economy welches doing well, wages and salariesacross the entire workforce accounted for roughly 66% of the national income, while corporations profi ts comprised only 8.3%. But last year, those numbers changed significantly, despite a healthy economy. Corporate profits were more than 13% of the nations income, and wages and salaries were now only 62%.There is plenty of evidence that workers have yet to receive their fair share of this most recent expansion - or even the previous one, according to The Times. It may then seem counterintuitive that 72% of Americans agreed, employers do their best to pay employees well, according to the Quartz at Work and SurveyMonkey poll. Especially when workers feel their paychecks are not what they should be, why do they still choose to believe the best of the corporate world?Quartzs reporterLila MacLellan had theories on why this disconnect exists - she says progressives may not be informed on economics, Americans may be placing greater faith in their own bosses than in other businesses, or people may have just drunk the Kool-Aid that financial bigwigs have served them.Whatever the reason, the SurveyMonkey and Quartz at Work numbers indicate an incongruence between Americans perceptions and national data and reports.Corporate profits have rarely swept up a bigger share of the nations wealth, the Times writes, and workers have rarelyshared a smaller one.

4 ways to navigate a long-term career break
4 ways to navigate a long-term career break4 ways to navigate a long-term career breakLeaving work to pursue maternity or paternity leave, a sabbatical, or something else long-term can be a tough decision. Heres what you can do before and during the process to ensure that your exit and re-entrance go as smoothly as possible.1. Make sure you have a strong networkTami Forman writes about this in a Forbes article about what women should do before leaving work for a leave. She says to think about making a network of people in various fields, not just within your own.She continuesWhen restarting, many women find they either want or need to pivot their career. Having contacts across a variety of different fields will give you more opportunities to do that successfully. In other words, cast a wide net in terms of who you know. Forman also says everyone should do this, even if not leaving work.2. Think about your financesThings are different when yourmain source of income disappears.Lifehacke r recommends examining your debt when getting ready for a sabbatical-style career breakDebt is like a sword hanging over your head- if possible, get rid of itbefore the break. If not, determine how to continue paying it off during the break. At the very least, ensure that you wont add any new debt because of your break.Other tips in the article include creating an emergency fund and figuring out how to fund everyday expenses, among others.3. Use the time off for reflectionIf you feel like you stumble to and from work every day with no time to think about what you want out of your professional path, a career break could be just what you need.Madeleine Hall writes about leaving her job as a Broadcast Associate for a morning show in New York City to teach English in Spain, and how the time offgave her the ability to do. She writes in a Levo postNot only will living outside your comfort zone bring you a fresh perspective on life in general, it will also give you the opportunity to reflec t upon your chosen career path and reevaluate whether you are on the right track. For me, I returned to New York City and decided that the thrill of breaking berichterstattung was not worth spending a few years on the overnight shift and eventually becoming a senior producer. My time away helped me realize that I hadnt been feeling as fulfilled as I had originally hoped. She also mentions that taking the time off might help you handle your job better upon your return and that either way, its healthy to take a step back and think about how you got to where you are.4. Pay attention to whats going on in your fieldStaying in touch with developments in your industry will still be critical, so be sure you dont duck out completely just because youre no longer coming into the office every day.iRelaunch CEO and co-founder Carol Fishman Cohen talks about how she barely kept up with the business news after leaving her job during this TEDxBeaconStreet talk. She continuedMy background is in financ e, and I hardly kept up with any news when I was home caring for my four young children. So I was afraid Id go into an interview and start talking about a company that didnt exist anymore. So I had to resubscribe to the Wall Street Journal and read it for a good six months cover to cover before I felt like I had a handle on what was going on in the business world again.Take advantage of your time off. Use it as an opportunity to help clear your mind, think about what you want, spend time doing what you love, and even reconnect with others.

Learn About City Council
Learn About City CouncilLearn About City CouncilA city council is a group of citizens who are individually elected to serve as the citys legislative body. Election of Council Members City council members can be elected in single-member districts, at-large or in some combination of the two. When council members are elected from single-member districts, the city is divided geographically so that citizens can vote in only one district. This ordnungsprinzip helps ensure that the issues and problems specific to one part of town are brought to the attention of the entire council. Ethnic minority candidates are more often elected in single-member districts than in at-large races. All citizens may vote for in each city council member race when council members are elected at-large. This system can lead to parts of town being ignored by the city council. When voter turnout is low, it is easy for well-connected, affluent citizens to be elected in at-large races. When cities employ both meth ods, some members are elected from a district and others are elected at-large. Under this method, there is usually more single-member district seats than at-large seats. Some cities place term limits on city council members. When a council member has served the maximum number of years or terms, the council member is prohibited from running for a city council seat in the next election cycle.? Interaction With the Mayor How a city council interacts with a mayor depends on the citys form of government. The duties of the mayor and council dictate how they will interact with one another. In the council-manager system, the mayor is a first among equals member of the city council. Depending on the city charter, the mayor may be elected by the citizens or chosen from among sitting council members. In the strong mayor system, the mayor is the chief executive officer of the city government. Councils enact laws and policies that the mayor carries out. Some mayors have veto power over counc il decision. The mayors influence often exceeds the mayors official powers. Compensation for Service on the Council Very few cities pay their city council members living wages in exchange for their service. Payments for service on the council are generally small tokens of appreciation that typically amount to no more than a few hundred or few thousand dollars a year.
